Job Description:  Head Setter
 

Hours:  Full Time, Exempt
 

Compensation:  Salary – DOE, Health Benefit, PTO, Profit Sharing

 

The Alaska Rock Gym is seeking a qualified individual to join its management team as Head Setter.  Under the direction of the General Manager, the successful applicant shall be responsible for the management and oversight of all setting, setting personnel, holds and wall hardware inventories, and safety and work at height protocols within the facility.  The Head Setter shall also collaborate with other department managers to ensure safety and sustainability in all gym operations and is responsible for continuing the Alaska Rock Gym’s deep dedication to excellence in all aspects of setting. 
 

The Alaska Rock Gym, founded in 1995, has created a strong and active presence within the climbing and fitness communities in Anchorage. In August of 2016, the gym relocated to a newly constructed, state of the art facility with over 20,000 square feet of climbing surface. The business is dedicated to continuing its tradition of providing great indoor climbing, strong youth programs, and innovative adult climbing and fitness opportunities to the recreational community of Anchorage and southcentral Alaska.


 

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Strong climbing background; sound physical condition; ability to project V7/5.12
  • Minimum five years setting experience
  • Knowledge of CWA Work at Height protocols and procedures
  • Ability to contribute as part of the management team
  • Excellent communication, organizational and motivational skills
  • Ability to manage and schedule setting and setting personnel
  • Ability to organize and present hold and equipment budgets
  • Ability to organize and expedite hold and equipment procurement plans
  • Knowledge of competitive climbing and USAC rules and regulations
  • Ability to create a workplace environment that fosters open dialogue, creativity and productivity
  • CPR/1st Aid certification
  • Ability to make a move to Anchorage and start employment no later than September 5, 2023

 


 
Essential Duties

  • Serve as leader and manager of the setting team. Schedule and direct all setting activities in the facility while successfully communicating specific setting strategies and goals to the team.
  • Communicate regularly with the General Manager, Facility Manager and Director of Youth Programs about the quality, balance, density, and rotation of routes and problems in the gym to ensure the needs of all programs and gym users are recognized and met.
  • Work closely with the Director of Youth Programs and the Comp Team Head Coach with the goal of understanding the needs and providing the setting to augment specific training goals of the team. 
  • Create an open and productive work environment in which the setting team can successfully perform the physical and creative work of setting, with particular emphasis on safety, initiative, and considerate communication.
  • Collaborate with other department heads in the planning and preparation of competitions and other climbing-related events taking place in the gym.
  • Coordinate, with other department heads, in-house risk management programs and training.
  • Hire, onboard, train and develop new members of the setting team to ensure that future needs are met and the standards of setting at the Alaska Rock Gym are preserved.
  • Provide regular performance evaluations and reviews for the members of the setting team.
  • Support continuing education and training initiatives for the setting team, including apprenticeship programs, setting workshops and efficiency training.
  • Schedule and manage work at height training for setting team.
  • Conduct and document regular safety meetings.
  • Manage and budget hold, rope, and wall hardware inventories.
  • Manage and document regular inspections of all equipment including ropes, auto belays, wall hardware and safety equipment.
  • Maintain setting equipment, tools, ladders, and holds room.

As anyone who has been employed in the climbing gym industry knows, there are situations that require extra hours and working at night and on weekends, and the setting and management teams generally do the lion’s share of this work.
