Job Description & Requirements

Great Parks of Hamilton County is accepting resumes for an Adventure Outpost Instructor based out of Winton Woods. Prepares and leads youth and adult group activities through various types of challenging recreational activities including but not limited to team building and low ropes course, climbing wall, kayaking, canoeing, archery, hiking and bicycling.  Provides public information and maintains good public relations.

This is a part time position that requires a flexible schedule and includes nights and weekends.

Prepares and leads youth and adult groups through various types of challenging recreational activities including but not limited to team building and low ropes course, climbing wall, kayaking, canoeing, archery, hiking and bicycling.

Participates in discussion based on the activities and assists chaperones with group control. 

Presents group activities in an accurate and educational manner for schools, community groups, organizations, and the general public and for special events.

Maintains recreational equipment and program equipment at Adventure Outpost under guidance of Adventure Outpost Manager.

Provides accurate information to general public and answers inquiries, maintains good public relations.

Works with Park District volunteer program.

Assists with programs, special events & visitor center operations, as delegated.

Assists with all aspects of programming and facility operations, as delegated, to meet departmental objectives.

Assists with upkeep of facility and equipment to ensure a safe & clean environment for groups and the public.

Performs job duties in accordance with Great Parks of Hamilton County’s policies, procedures, and performance expectations. 

Maintains confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information.

Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as required. 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Utilizes and promotes environmentally sustainable practices and processes.

Performs other job duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Recreational equipment, park vehicles, computer; printer; calculator; copier; fax machine; telephone; postage machine and other standard office equipment, and other standard industry equipment.

CONTACT WITH OTHERS

Visitors, GPHC Volunteers and employees, general public and other job contacts.

 WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office working conditions, as well as frequent exposure to outdoor working conditions including sun, heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, water (lakes and rivers), dust, noise, wildlife, biting insects and rough terrain; regular exposure to typical traffic conditions and hazards.

USUAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee frequently exhibits manual dexterity performing job duties, and frequently talks and hears when working and interacting with job contacts.

The employee occasionally sits, depending on location, for extended periods of time, and frequently stands and walks over uneven terrain.  Employee frequently reaches with hands and arms, climbs and balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls.  Employee frequently paddles canoes and kayaks, hikes with backpack, rides bicycles, climbs a rock wall, and loads/unloads equipment overhead on trailers and boat racks.

Employee regularly exhibits normal vision demands.  Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when using a computer.

Employee regularly lifts items up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifts items up to 50 pounds. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: recreational activities and equipment, group dynamics; outdoor leadership; public relations.

Ability to: Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form; teach a variety of outdoor recreation skills; demonstrate leadership qualities; develop and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, associates, children and general public; speak effectively before groups; relate with both children and adults; present a good public image; initiative to seek out and implement new programs; lead groups in various recreational activities. Exhibit good problem solving and good judgement in keeping with the mission of the park district; maintain confidential and sensitive information; understand and demonstrate respect for cultural and socio-economic differences; support a working atmosphere consistent with Great Parks’ equal employment opportunity; embrace and support constructive change; consistently follow safety and security procedures and practices; contribute toward building a positive team working environment; establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, officials, general public, and other job contacts.

Skill in: operating recreational equipment; operating vehicles; operating office equipment; verbal and written communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  An example of an acceptable qualification is: 

Associate’s Degree in Parks and Recreation and at least 1 year of training or experience with demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of recreational activities, practices and procedures. 

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

LICENSE OF CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License that meets GPHC current carrier guidelines

Starting Pay rate is $11.17 per hour. Benefits include membership in Ohio Public Employee Retirement System and free or discounted use of many Great Parks of Hamilton County recreational activities. Applications will be accepted throughout the season. EOE
