Job Description & Requirements

The Wilderness Exchange mission is to serve the Front Range climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, backcountry skiing and split-boarding community with the highest level of customer service, the deepest selection of technical gear, and the best deals to be found on outdoor equipment. The primary responsibility of the Store Manager is to ensure that the experience of every customer and employee in the shop reflects our values: to exceed customers’ expectations in every way, to create a positive and rewarding work environment that values both individual excellence as well as teamwork, to stoke the passion at the heart of the outdoor culture and lifestyle, to help amplify and support the outdoor communities that we serve, and to work in every way toward the continued success of the business. The following 6 responsibilities are at the core of the management of a successful retail operation and represent the fundamental responsibilities of the position:

1.       Personnel/HR  Management

·         Providing exceptional leadership through example 

·         Overseeing, prioritizing, and managing all sales floor functions and activities of staff on a daily basis 

·         Hiring and building an exceptional team of Sales Leads and Sales Associates with a heavy focus on their professional development

·         Promoting a culture of accountability through ongoing evaluation of staff performance 

·         Scheduling and payroll 

·         Responsible for all staff training and improvements to training materials where applicable

·         Organizing quarterly staff outings and teambuilding activities

2.       Customer Service

·         Ensuring that every customer has an exceptional experience in the store

·         Resolving customer conflicts and appeasement issues effectively

·         Ensuring all warranties and product issues are resolved quickly and effectively

·         Overseeing rental and service programs and ensuring all customer expectations are met

3.       Store Presentation/ Merchandising/Product Logistics

·         Overseeing web picking and organization of back stock rooms

·         Assist buyers in overseeing product logistics from Receiving to sales floor - ensuring that all inventory is represented on the sales floor

·         Identifying overstocked and distressed inventory and working with buyers to liquidate

·         Ensuring clear product presentation and merchandising throughout the store

4.       Communications

·         Effectively communicate daily/weekly/seasonal goals to the sales team

·         Creating a “United Front” with General Manager to ensure that a consistent message is delivered to all staff

·         Providing feedback to Buyers on category assortment, performance, and low inventory levels on key SKUS

·         Working with Buyers to direct staff with their needs for category management and product placement

·         Communicating with Shipping /Receiving personnel on will calls and all off-site inventory logistics

·         Assisting General Manager with community outreach - developing partnerships and programs to benefit the outdoor communities that we serve

5.       Opening/Closing, Cash Management

·         Responsible for ensuring accuracy of all register opening/closing protocols and troubleshooting discrepancies 

·         Responsible for store security – maintaining security system, reducing external and internal shrink, ensuring loss prevention protocols are being followed by all staff

·         Responsible for all cash management – cash discrepancies, change fund

6.       Supplies/ Shop Maintenance

·         Purchasing all necessary supplies for shop operations

·         Vetting all maintenance requests to landlord and property management team

·         Directing all fixturing programs and seasonal changeovers

·         Coordinating cleaning and carpet vendors for scheduled service

·         Ensuring an impeccable store presentation

Other Job Requirements:

  • 2-3 years previous Store Manager experience in the outdoor industry is required
  • Good sense of humor is preferred, but not required
  • Must have proof of Covid vaccination
