Position Summary:

The Program Coordinator is a full-time, exempt position that manages the developing PA Outdoor Network (PON), an effort to create broader visibility and understanding of the outdoor recreation economy in Pennsylvania. The Program Coordinator reports to the Program Director, Trails & Outdoor Recreation (PD). The Program Coordinator will help develop program initiatives, assist in establishing strategic direction, and will coordinate with staff in PEC’s offices, along with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders on the implementation of projects that strengthen the outdoor industry, the connection to public lands and getting Pennsylvanians outdoors.  These may include but are not limited to working with state agencies, developing events, and fostering community efforts to promote the outdoors.

Position Activities:

  1. PA Outdoor Network - Help shape PEC’s growing work connecting the outdoor recreation industry and public lands issues. 
    1. Drive strategic vision for PA Outdoor Network, including engaging with National and state recreation advocates, agency and legislative staff to increase visibility of outdoor recreation interests.
    2. Shape the discussion around the connection between public lands access and a vibrant industry.
    3. Coordinate bi-monthly newsletter including producing content, coordinating with staff for topics, maintain the growing contact database and help with outreach.
    4. Maintain and regularly update social media and web site for the project.
    5. Build out list of businesses statewide and coordinate with staff as to how best to leverage this information.
    6. Help develop and administer outreach events, potentially including a Harrisburg event and regional outreach efforts. 
    7. Work with Senior Vice President of Legal & Government Affairs to develop and coordinate state and federal policy communications.
    8. Contribute to the development of a strategic vision for the initiative.

Specific Preferred Skills Are:

1.     Demonstrated success in project management and proven ability to achieve project goals and objectives.

2.     Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

3.     Good organizational, networking and coordination skills.

4.     Ability to work effectively with and relate to a wide range of people, including business executives, non-governmental organizations, state and local government officials, community groups, elected and appointed officials and their support staff.

5.     Ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and maintain schedules.

6.     Experience in the outdoor industry (retail or otherwise) is highly desirable.

7.     Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.

8.     Ability to travel (drive when necessary) to locations across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field is desired, but real-world experience and demonstrated skills are more pertinent to the position. The ideal candidate will have a varied background including 3-5 years in the outdoor recreation industry, significant public communication (both in person and written) experience, and demonstrated ability to work with partner organizations, marshaling resources and working with varied personalities. Knowledge of and a passion for the environment, sustainable development and alternative transportation are a given. 

Compensation and Term: 

This is a salaried position commensurate with experience within a range of $35,000-$40,000 annually and includes an attractive benefits package (medical benefits, vacation, holidays, 403(b), life insurance, et cetera). It is anticipated that the position will last at least through December 31, 2022 and may be renewed based upon available funding.

Location:

PEC’s State College Office is located at 2009 Cato Avenue, State College, PA 16801. The possibility of other PEC office locations will be considered. Occasional travel to other locales in the region and state will be required.
