Creative Design Engineer
SMC, a world leader in the design and manufacture of mountaineering and rope rescue equipment is seeking a creative design engineer with both a passion for creating category-defining products and the perfect balance of creative and analytical skills.
Primary Responsibilities
The creative design engineer will be part of a team that takes products through the design process from user research through concept, design, engineering and prototyping phases. The ideal candidate has between two to three years of experience. They will be eager to be mentored and learn new skills that go far beyond typical mechanical engineering. These new capabilities will create an opportunity for the candidate to grow into a position with more responsibility and a big impact, both at SMC and in the rest of the outdoor industry.
Experience & Education
= 2-3 years of design or engineering professional experience
= Degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
= Experience with climbing, mountaineering and/or technical rope rescue is a plus
= Knowledge of manufacturing processes is a plus
Skills: required
= Creativity/divergent thinking
= Analytical/convergent thinking
= Proficiency with engineering calculations
= Knowledge of mechanics and physics
= Attention to detail
= Self-sufficiency, including the ability to plan, organize and manage your time
= Communication: verbal, written and graphic
= Proficiency in solid modeling CAD software
= Ability to create technical drawings using critical dimensions and tolerances
= Microsoft Office Suite

= Proficiency with FEA software
= Ability to sketch by hand
= Proficiency with solid and surface modeling in Solidworks
= Prototype fabrication including use of common machine shop tools
= Test fixture design and fabrication
